As a consequence of the defeat in the Danish - Prussian war in 1864, Denmark lost the duchy of Schleswig Holstein to Prussia. The duchy of Schleswig Holstein remained a part of Germany until 1920, when it was split and the northern part of Schleswig was voted back to Denmark as a result of the treaty of Versailles. After 1920 more than 25.000 of the estimated 100.000 inhabitants of Nordschleswig remained loyal to Germany.

During the early thirties, the relationship between the German Minority and the Danes in Nordschleswig became more and more strained, as a reflection of the growing nationalism in Germany. As Hitler came to power in Germany in 1933, National Socialism became a strong influence on the German Minority in Nordschleswig. After some internal controversies, an official National Socialism party was founded in 1935 and named NSDAP-N - Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei - Nordschleswig . The political goal for the NSDAP-N was to reunite Nordschleswig with Germany.

Almost every part of the German Minority came under the influence of the NSDAP-N. To strengthen the nationalism, the NSDAP-N created an infrastructure inside the German Minority equal to the one used by the NSADP in Germany. Almost every major fragment of the NSDAP organization was adopted by the NSDAP-N and incorporated in Nordschleswig.

Some most important organizations inside the NSDAP-N were :

Organizations in Nordschleswig Equal Organizations in Germany
DJN Deutsche Jungenschaft Nordschleswig Hitlerjugend
BDN Deutsche Mädchenschaft Nordschleswig Bund Deutscher Mädel
SK Schleswigsche Kameradschaft SA - Sturm-Abteilung
